Use of object data

The University of Göttingen is committed to the principles of Open Science and Open Access. It makes the data published in the portal sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de available for free re-use, especially in education and research, and prefers to use Creative-Commons licenses.

All object reproductions on sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de that are marked as public domain are in the public domain. You may use them without request:

  • share (transfer, distribute, copy)
  • use (for all purposes, including commercially, e.g. for school, research, teaching, publications)
  • edit (e.g. change, combine with other content, also to create something new)

All object reproductions marked with the CC-BY notice may also be used without request, provided the copyright holder and author are named.

  • share (transfer, distribute, copy)
  • use (for all purposes, including commercially, e.g. for school, research, teaching, publications)
  • edit (e.g. change, combine with other content, also to create something new)

The same applies under the CC-BY-SA license, which also requires that you distribute the products of your subsequent use under the same license as the material you obtained from the University of Göttingen (Share Alike).

You may also use all object reproductions marked with other CC licenses without request, provided you comply with the linked, more restrictive license conditions.

All object reproductions that are protected by copyright and marked "Rights reserved - open access" can be consulted on sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de, but can only be reused upon request to the named rights holder.

All information about the objects (metadata) on sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de may also be shared, used and edited without request (like the public domain objects) (license CC0).

Please contact us if you would like to obtain data from sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de via an API. We look forward to receiving your request.

Recommendations for good scientific practice

The University of Göttingen is committed to ensuring good scientific practice and sees it as one of its central tasks in the digital knowledge society to communicate the principles of fair and free use of knowledge resources, research data and materials to the public.

The following recommendations are derived from: The Europeana Usage Guidelines for public domain works. We ask you to respect these recommendations. This is not a legally binding contract.

Specify the source

If you use the public domain object reproductions, we ask you to provide the title of the object and other information relevant to your target group according to the metadata. So that others can also find out where they can find the object or image, we also ask you to provide a reference to the University of Göttingen and to use the citation link provided with the individual object at sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de. We recommend citing the source as follows: Maker, title, date; University of Göttingen, institute, author of the reproduction and the citation link to the object.

Networking academically

On sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de you will find validated scientific data on Göttingen's collection objects, which are indexed by scientists in the Göttingen Collection Database and other specialist databases and then displayed on the portal with professionally produced reproductions. However, further, more in-depth and more up-to-date information on the objects may be available at the University of Göttingen, some of which is the subject and product of ongoing research and processing. We therefore strongly recommend that you contact the respective collection managers and enter into an active exchange about the processing of the objects, especially with regard to the scientific re-use of the data. We appreciate your interest and look forward to hearing from you!

To protect the reputation of the producer and the University

If you modify a public domain image, do not attribute your modifications to the original producer or the University of Göttingen. The name and logo of the maker or the University of Göttingen may not be used to identify the modified work without permission.

To show respect for the original

Please do not use the object reproductions in an illegal or misleading context. If you modify and publish a work in the public domain, clearly indicate that you have modified the original.

Sharing knowledge

If you use a public domain work to create a new work or if you have information on a public domain work - e.g. on provenance, creators, content or rights holders - we ask you to share your knowledge. Please send the information to the providing institution, i.e. in the case of sammlungen.uni-goettingen.de via the contact form or to the contact persons of the relevant individual collections of the University of Göttingen listed on the website.

To be sensitive to other values

If the collection item contains culturally or ethically sensitive elements, we ask you to act thoughtfully and prudently. Please be aware of whether your alterations or use of such elements could offend or insult other people or other cultural groups.

Preserve public domain markings and annotations

We ask all users of public domain works never to remove existing public domain markings or annotations and never to disseminate misleading information about the copyright status of the work.

Ordering images

Please contact us via our contact form, or get in touch directly with the relevant contact person in the individual collections if you require the following:

  • an image protected by copyright

Please provide the following information about the planned publication with your request to use the image: author, title, publisher / production, circulation / number of visitors to a website, publication date, type of publication / product (commercial, non-profit).  Please note that you must also ask the respective copyright holders for permission before using copyrighted works.
